Open Question: Why is Jesus always depicted as a light skinned Caucasion?

....in artwork and in the films? For those of you familiar with the Malcolm X movie and/or Alex Haley book, this is not a new question, but it's worth continued discussion. Jesus, a Jew born in the heart of the Middle East.....why isn't this reflected in our images of him? I've already learned a great deal from your answers, so thank you all.
